What makes a food "super"?
The term “superfood” gets used quite a bit and no doubt you've heard about all of their amazing benefits, but what are superfoods?
Aside from their high-nutrient density and their potential to help you shed a few extra pounds, these foods can help you achieve a more optimal level of health. Superfoods can help prevent chronic disease, while at the same time, improving the way you feel all day, every day.
Superfoods alone won't exactly turn you into the incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman, but by combining them with a regular exercise routine and a healthy diet, adding a few of these superfoods into your day can improve other areas of your overall health.
How Do Superfoods Work?
It's not a surprise that when you eat not-so-good for you food, you feel not so good. Of course, when you load up on nutrient-dense fruits and veggies, you find yourself feeling good and more energetic.
Superfoods kick it up a notch by supplying your body with a mega dose of nutrients that improve your body's ability to function.
Technically there’s no set criteria for what makes a superfood, well, super. Superfoods are really those foods that are über packed with nutrients and fuel your body with a strong dose of the vitamins and minerals you need to thrive.
What better way to add a few servings of these superfoods into your day then by packing them in these delicious Chocolate Doughnuts, right?
Chocolate Superfood Doughnuts...
aka - Super Doughnuts
- 1 ripe plantain
- 1/4 cup unsweetened sunflower seed butter
- 1/4 cup real cacao powder
- 1/4 cup almond flour
- 2 Tablespoons Maca (or Lucuma)
- 1 Tablespoon Reishi Powder
- 1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- pinch of pink himalayan salt
- stevia for extra sweetness (optional)
Preheat the oven to 350°F and liberally grease a doughnut pan with coconut oil.
Puree plantain in a blender. [note - it helps to add 2 or 3 tablespoons strong brewed coffee or non-dairy milk to the blender to puree more easily]. In a separate mixing bowl, combine puree and sunflower seed butter then slowly sift in remaining ingredients until well combined.
Scoop batter into the doughnut pan and bake 11-ish minutes.
Remove from the oven and let that deliciousness cool before scarfing them down.
